What Is a Marketing Analytics Model?
A marketing analytics model is a structured method for interpreting marketing data. It defines which inputs matter, how they relate to each other, and what conclusions can be drawn. Without a model, you have numbers. With a model, you have a framework for making sense of those numbers in a business context.
Models range from simple rule-based systems, like assigning 100% credit to the last touchpoint before a conversion, to complex statistical approaches that account for time lag, diminishing returns, and external market factors. The sophistication of the model should match the complexity of the business problem, not the other way around.

Attribution Models: Assigning Credit Across Touchpoints
Attribution models are the most widely used category of marketing analytics model. They answer one specific question: which touchpoints deserve credit for a conversion? The answer to that question determines how budget gets allocated, which channels get investment, and which get cut.
The challenge is that attribution is fundamentally a political problem dressed as a technical one. Every model produces a different answer, and the answer you get depends entirely on the rules you set. Attribution theory in marketing is worth understanding properly before you commit to any single model, because the assumptions baked into each approach have real consequences for how you read performance.

Last-click attribution assigns 100% of conversion credit to the final touchpoint before purchase. It’s simple, easy to implement, and systematically wrong. It rewards channels that appear at the end of the buying experience, typically branded search and direct, while ignoring everything that built awareness and intent earlier. When I was managing paid search at scale, last-click made our SEM numbers look exceptional. It was also masking how much of that traffic was being driven by TV and display investment that never got any credit.
First-click attribution is the mirror image. It gives all credit to the first touchpoint, which overstates the role of awareness channels and ignores the channels that closed the sale. Useful as a diagnostic lens, rarely useful as a primary model.
Linear attribution splits credit equally across all touchpoints in the conversion path. It’s more honest than single-touch models but makes an assumption, that every touchpoint contributed equally, that is almost never true in practice.
Time-decay attribution gives more credit to touchpoints closer to conversion. This makes intuitive sense for short sales cycles but can be misleading for considered purchases where the early research phase is doing most of the heavy lifting.
Position-based attribution (also called U-shaped) splits credit between the first and last touchpoints, with the remainder distributed across the middle. It acknowledges that both acquisition and conversion matter, which is a more defensible position than most single-touch models.
Data-driven attribution uses machine learning to assign credit based on the actual contribution of each touchpoint, derived from patterns in your conversion data. It sounds like the obvious answer. The catch is that it requires significant data volume to produce reliable outputs, and the model is a black box. You can see the outputs but not the reasoning. That makes it hard to challenge when something looks wrong.
One thing worth noting: Google Analytics has real limitations in what its goals can track, and those gaps affect the reliability of any attribution model built on top of GA data. Offline conversions, cross-device journeys, and certain engagement signals fall outside what the platform can capture natively.
Marketing Mix Modelling: The Econometric Approach
Marketing mix modelling (MMM) takes a different approach entirely. Rather than tracking individual user journeys, it uses statistical regression to model the relationship between marketing inputs and business outcomes at an aggregate level. You feed it historical spend data, sales data, and external variables like seasonality, competitor activity, and economic conditions, and it produces estimates of the contribution each channel made to revenue.
MMM has been around since the 1960s and fell out of fashion when digital attribution made individual-level tracking possible. It’s having a significant revival now, partly because of cookie deprecation and privacy changes that are making user-level tracking harder, and partly because marketers are rediscovering that aggregate models handle offline channels and brand investment better than digital attribution ever did.
The strengths of MMM are real. It captures the effect of channels that attribution can’t track, including TV, out-of-home, and print. It accounts for external factors that influence sales independently of marketing. It handles long-term brand effects that operate on timescales that attribution models simply can’t see. The limitations are equally real. MMM requires two to three years of historical data to produce reliable outputs. It can’t tell you what’s happening at a granular campaign or keyword level. It’s expensive to build properly and requires statistical expertise that most marketing teams don’t have in-house. And it produces estimates, not certainties. The confidence intervals on MMM outputs are often wider than the models’ advocates admit.
My view: MMM is most valuable for businesses with significant above-the-line spend, long sales cycles, or multiple offline channels. For a pure-play digital business with a short conversion window, it’s often overkill.
Incrementality Testing: The Closest Thing to a Ground Truth
Incrementality testing asks a different question from attribution or MMM. Instead of “which channel gets credit?”, it asks “what would have happened without this channel?” That’s a more useful question, and it produces more actionable answers.
The standard approach is a geo-based or audience-based holdout test. You expose one group to a campaign and withhold it from a matched control group, then measure the difference in conversion rates between the two groups. The difference is the incremental lift attributable to the campaign.
This approach is particularly valuable for channels where attribution models tend to overstate value. Retargeting is the classic example. Last-click attribution makes retargeting look extraordinarily efficient because it’s capturing people who were already going to convert. An incrementality test often reveals that a significant portion of retargeting “conversions” would have happened anyway. Measuring affiliate marketing incrementality is a specific application of this same principle, and one that can dramatically change how you evaluate affiliate channel performance.
The limitation of incrementality testing is that it’s resource-intensive. Designing a clean test, running it long enough to reach statistical significance, and interpreting the results correctly takes time and expertise. It also only tells you about the channels you test. Predictive Analytics Models: Looking Forward, Not Back
Attribution, MMM, and incrementality testing are all retrospective. They tell you what happened. Predictive analytics models use historical data to forecast what’s likely to happen next, which channels will perform, which customers are likely to convert, which are likely to churn.
The most commonly used predictive models in marketing are:
Customer lifetime value (CLV) models estimate the total revenue a customer is likely to generate over their relationship with a business. CLV modelling changes how you think about acquisition cost. If you know a customer acquired through a particular channel has a CLV three times higher than one acquired through a different channel, you can justify paying more for them. Without CLV modelling, you’re optimising for the first transaction and potentially destroying long-term value.
Propensity models score customers or prospects on their likelihood to take a specific action, converting, churning, upgrading. They’re used to prioritise outreach, personalise messaging, and allocate sales effort. The quality of a propensity model depends entirely on the quality and relevance of the features you feed it. I’ve seen propensity models built on data that was months out of date produce scores that were actively misleading.
Demand forecasting models predict future sales volumes based on historical patterns, seasonality, and external signals. In my agency years, having a reliable demand forecast changed how we planned paid media campaigns. Rather than reacting to performance after the fact, we could pre-position budgets ahead of demand spikes. When I was working on a music festival campaign early in my career, we could see the demand pattern building in search data days before conversions materialised. That kind of forward visibility is what separates reactive media buying from genuinely strategic planning.
Predictive models introduce a specific risk that’s worth naming: they can create self-fulfilling prophecies. If a model predicts low conversion probability for a segment and you therefore spend less marketing budget on that segment, the model’s prediction becomes true not because it was correct but because you acted on it. Data-driven marketing done well means interrogating model outputs critically, not treating them as instructions.
Cohort Analysis: Understanding Behaviour Over Time
Cohort analysis groups customers by a shared characteristic, typically the date they first converted or the channel through which they were acquired, and tracks their behaviour over time. It’s one of the most underused analytics approaches in marketing, and one of the most revealing.
Where cohort analysis earns its keep is in exposing the difference between acquisition volume and acquisition quality. A channel that brings in high volumes of customers who churn quickly is not a good channel, regardless of what your CPA or ROAS figures say. A channel that brings in fewer customers who retain well and buy repeatedly is often worth far more. You can’t see this in aggregate metrics. You can only see it in cohort data.
For subscription businesses, SaaS companies, and any business with a meaningful repeat purchase dynamic, cohort analysis should be foundational rather than optional. Inbound marketing ROI is a useful example of where cohort thinking matters: content-acquired customers often have different retention profiles than paid-acquired customers, and that difference changes the ROI calculation significantly.
Measuring Newer Channels: AI, GEO, and Emerging Formats
The analytics models covered so far were largely developed for established channels. As new formats emerge, the measurement question becomes more complex, not less.
AI-generated content and AI avatars used in marketing create measurement challenges that standard attribution models aren’t designed to handle. The question isn’t just “did this content drive a conversion?” but “what was the incremental contribution of this format versus a human equivalent?” Measuring the effectiveness of AI avatars in marketing requires a framework that accounts for engagement quality, brand perception effects, and conversion contribution across a longer window than most attribution models use.
Generative engine optimisation (GEO) presents a different measurement problem. When your content appears in AI-generated search responses, traditional click-based metrics don’t capture the full picture. Measuring the success of GEO campaigns requires tracking brand mention frequency in AI outputs, downstream search behaviour, and direct traffic patterns, none of which fit neatly into existing attribution frameworks.
The broader point is that the analytics models you use should evolve as your channel mix evolves. Applying a 2015 attribution model to a 2025 channel mix is a category error. The model needs to match the reality you’re trying to measure.
Choosing the Right Model for Your Business
The most common mistake I see is treating model selection as a technical decision made by analysts in isolation. It isn’t. The right model depends on the decisions your business actually needs to make, the data you have available, and the resources you can invest in implementation and interpretation.
A few practical principles:
Match model complexity to decision complexity. A small e-commerce business optimising weekly paid search budgets doesn’t need econometric modelling. A large retailer allocating budget across TV, digital, and in-store promotions probably does. The model should serve the decision, not impress the stakeholder.
Use multiple models in combination. MMM and attribution models are complementary, not competing. MMM tells you the strategic channel mix. Attribution tells you how to optimise within channels. Using both together gives you a more complete picture than either alone. Understanding your core marketing metrics is the prerequisite for knowing which model to apply to which question.
Treat model outputs as inputs to thinking, not conclusions. Early in my career, I built a website from scratch because I couldn’t get budget approved through normal channels. The lesson wasn’t about coding. It was about not accepting the first answer you’re given and finding another way to solve the problem. Analytics models deserve the same scepticism. When a model tells you something that contradicts your commercial instinct, that’s worth investigating rather than accepting.
Invest in data quality before model sophistication. A simple model running on clean, well-structured data will outperform a sophisticated model running on inconsistent, incomplete data every time. UTM tracking is a basic example: without consistent UTM parameters across campaigns, your attribution data is unreliable regardless of which attribution model you apply to it. Failing to prepare your analytics infrastructure is preparing to fail, and that’s as true now as it was when that observation was first made.
Build for the decisions you make regularly, not the ones you make once a year. The most valuable analytics model is the one that gets used consistently to inform ongoing decisions. A comprehensive MMM that gets run once and filed away has less practical value than a simpler model that shapes weekly budget decisions across the year.
