The quality of a research brief determines the quality of the research. This is true whether you are working with an external research agency or running the project in-house.
A good brief starts with the decision, not the data. What are you trying to decide? What would you do differently if the research came back with finding A versus finding B? If the answer is “nothing much”, the research brief needs to be rewritten or the project needs to be questioned.
The brief should specify the target population with precision. Not “UK adults” but “UK adults aged 25-54 who have purchased a product in this category in the past 12 months and are the primary decision-maker in their household.” The more precisely you define who you need to hear from, the more useful the sample will be.
