I’ve sat in enough agency strategy sessions to know how content surveys usually get commissioned. Someone senior asks whether the audience actually wants what the team is producing. A survey gets drafted, often by whoever has the most time rather than whoever has the clearest thinking. The questions are vague. The sample is whoever happens to open the email that week. And the output gets presented at a quarterly review with a bar chart and a confident narrative that masks the fact that the data could support almost any conclusion.
The core problem is question design. Most content surveys ask people to rate things on a scale of one to five, which tells you very little. “How valuable do you find our content?” is not a useful question. It produces polite, socially acceptable answers. The structural principles that produce higher completion rates are straightforward. Start with the easiest questions. Put the most important questions in the first half.
