A useful way to think about digital advertising metrics is in three tiers: activity metrics, efficiency metrics, and outcome metrics. Most teams spend the majority of their reporting time on the first tier and not enough on the third.

Honest approximation means being willing to say “we think this is working, here is the evidence, and here are the limits of that evidence.” It means not over-claiming based on platform metrics. It means running incrementality tests even when they are inconvenient. And it means being honest with clients and stakeholders when the measurement picture is unclear, rather than constructing a narrative from whatever numbers happen to look good.
That is not a comfortable position. It is a commercially credible one. And over time, it builds more trust than a polished dashboard ever will.
