Audience quality metrics
Who is reading your content? Not how many people, but who. If your content is pulling in people who match your ideal customer profile, that is meaningful. If it is pulling in a large volume of people who will never buy from you, high traffic is a vanity number. Metrics worth tracking here include the proportion of new visitors who match target firmographic or demographic criteria, lead quality scores from content-sourced contacts, and pipeline contribution from content-influenced accounts.
Depth of engagement
Time on page and scroll depth are imperfect proxies, but they are better than page views alone. A piece that gets 5,000 views with an average read time of 20 seconds is not performing. A piece that gets 800 views with an average read time of four minutes and a 60% scroll depth is doing something real. The signal is whether people are consuming the content, not just landing on it.
Return and recurrence
Returning visitors are a signal that your content is building a relationship, not just capturing a moment of intent. Newsletter open rates over time, direct traffic growth, and branded search volume are all indicators that content is compounding. This is the long-term value that is hardest to attribute but often most important to track.
Downstream commercial signals
What happens to people after they consume your content? Do they request a demo? Do they enter a trial? Do they convert at a higher rate than people who did not engage with content? These are not perfect categories. A lot of content serves multiple stages. But the discipline of assigning primary intent to a piece of content, and measuring it against the metrics relevant to that intent, is more useful than applying the same dashboard to everything.
Step 3: Connect content data to commercial data
This is the step most teams skip because it requires work across systems. You need to know which contacts in your CRM engaged with which content, and what happened to those contacts commercially. I judged the Effie Awards for a period, and one of the consistent patterns in the entries that did not make it through was short measurement windows. Teams were evaluating campaigns over eight or twelve weeks when the brand-building effects they were trying to demonstrate take six to eighteen months to show up in the data. Content is the same. Bounce rate without context. A high bounce rate on a blog post where the goal is to get someone to read an article and leave is not a problem. A high bounce rate on a landing page designed to capture leads is. The metric only means something in relation to the intent of the page.

The reason content measurement matters commercially is that content is one of the few marketing activities that can reach genuinely new audiences at scale without the marginal cost structure of paid media. Market penetration strategy depends on reaching people who do not yet know you. Content, done well, is one of the most efficient ways to do that. But only if you are measuring whether it is actually reaching new audiences, not just serving existing ones.
When I was growing an agency from 20 to 100 people, we had to win clients who had never heard of us. Paid media helped, but the content we published, the thinking pieces, the sector-specific analysis, the honest takes on what was working and what was not, was what got us into rooms we would not otherwise have been invited into. Beyond the standard dashboard metrics, there are a handful of signals that tend to be more predictive of content performance and are routinely ignored because they require more effort to track.
Sales team usage. Are your salespeople sending content to prospects? Are they referencing it in conversations? If the answer is no, either the content is not useful to the sales process or the sales team does not know it exists. Both are problems. Tracking content usage by the sales team is a signal of content relevance that no analytics platform will give you automatically.
Content-influenced deal velocity. Do deals where prospects engaged with content close faster than deals where they did not? This requires CRM data and some analysis, but it is one of the most commercially compelling metrics you can present to a CFO. Organic search share of voice over time. Not just your own rankings, but how your content is performing relative to competitors for the topics that matter to your buyers. Customer content engagement. Are your existing customers reading your content? If they are, it is a retention and expansion signal. If they are not, you may have a gap in your onboarding or customer success content that is contributing to churn. Most content teams focus entirely on acquisition metrics and ignore what their content is doing, or not doing, for the customer base.
Direct traffic growth over time. Direct traffic is a rough proxy for brand awareness and content memorability. If people are typing your URL directly, or clicking a bookmark, it means your content has created enough of an impression that they are coming back without being prompted by a search or an ad. That is a brand-building signal that is easy to undervalue because it does not show up neatly in attribution models.
