Why Qualitative Research Gets Underestimated

Qualitative findings, by contrast, are messier. The most commonly used are in-depth interviews, focus groups, ethnographic research, and online qual communities. Each has a different purpose, and choosing the wrong one for your question is one of the most common ways research budgets get wasted.
In-depth interviews (IDIs) are one-to-one conversations, typically 45 to 90 minutes, conducted by a skilled moderator. A questionnaire is designed to get consistent, comparable answers across a large sample. A discussion guide is designed to create the conditions for exploration. Good discussion guides are built around three or four core areas of inquiry, with probing questions beneath each. The opening should be warm and low-stakes, getting the participant comfortable and talking before you move into the substantive areas. Anyone who presents qual findings as though they can is either confused or hoping you are. The value of qual is in the depth and texture of the findings, not in their statistical weight.
What it can do is generate hypotheses that quantitative research can then test at scale. It can surface the language your audience uses so that your messaging reflects their vocabulary rather than yours. It can identify the friction points in a customer experience that analytics data shows exist but cannot explain. And it can reveal the emotional and psychological drivers behind decisions that rational analysis misses entirely.

They have seen the hesitations and the body language. The findings are not abstract to them.
Qual in the Age of Digital Signals
There is a version of the argument that says qualitative research is less necessary now because digital behaviour data tells you so much about what people do. I understand the argument and I think it misses the point.
Digital signals are extraordinarily good at showing you what happened. Someone visited three pages, abandoned the checkout, came back two days later, and converted on a different device. You can see all of that. What you cannot see is why. Was it price? Uncertainty about the product? A distraction? A deliberate comparison process? The click data does not tell you. A 20-minute conversation with someone who did exactly that will tell you more than a month of session recordings.

What they cannot show you is the intent and context behind those searches, the job to be done, the anxiety being resolved, the decision being made. Qual fills that gap.
